Anna Nunes van den Hoven (1993) is a Dutch-Portuguese artist based in The Hague. Her practice combines drawing, sculpture, photography and collaborative processes. Long-term engagement with academics, craftspeople and communities connected through Dutch and Portuguese colonial histories informs her research into how cultures and landscapes have been displaced and transformed.

In her practice, material is understood not only as a medium, but also as a carrier of memory and a witness to histories embedded in landscapes, objects and communities. Across her work, Nunes pays particular attention to women, whose knowledge have often remained absent from dominant narratives.

These concerns come together in an ongoing body of work in which earth, clay and textiles become witnesses to a ceramic practice historically transmitted by women. The works trace how this practice has been shaped through colonialism and migration across the Atlantic.

Travelling with textiles to geographies connected to this heritage, Nunes rubs local soils into their surface and invites knowledge holders to practise their ceramic tradition directly onto the fabric. The textiles absorbs pigments, gestures and material traces of each place. The resulting textile works and ceramic objects act as archives, tracing how this knowledge has travelled, adapted and continues to persist within landscapes and communities.

In 2026, this body of work continued through the Patrimónios em Trânsito residency programme of the São Tomé and Príncipe Biennale. It will culminate in an installation for the 2027 edition of the biennale and continue through collaborations with ceramicists in Guinea-Bissau.
