Anna Nunes van den Hoven (1993, PT) is a Dutch-Portuguese multidisciplinary artist. At Wageningen University, she studied cultural practices that sustain nature and foster collectivity. Building on this background, she develops interdisciplinary artworks and projects with communities, craftspeople and researchers. Through co-creation, they deepen their shared understanding of these practices and how they are continued and adapted to changing circumstances.

Projects are conceived, developed and realised together. Nunes is currently working with ceramicists, communities and researchers around a ceramic practice in which women play a central role. Collective artworks incorporating local earth and clay make visible how this practice connects different landscapes and communities across the Atlantic.
Central to the project is the resilience of women and their communities: how they have continued to practise and pass on their ceramic knowledge despite colonialism and forced displacement through the transatlantic slave trade, and how this practice continues within changing ecological and social contexts, including those shaped by contemporary migration.

Observations and experiences from these collaborations inform her sculptures, drawings and paintings. She reflects on how shared histories and colonial processes continue to shape social structures and power relations, with particular attention to women’s place in society and relationships between humans and nature.

In the studio, conscious reflection and unconscious associations take shape through making. The resulting works help her understand her thoughts, questions and feelings and making sense of the world she inhabits.
